What’s It Really Like Learning to Sing with Me?

People search weird things online when they’re thinking about singing lessons.

I know, because I’ve seen them:

  • “Am I too old to learn how to sing?”

  • “Can you teach yourself to sing or do I need a teacher?”

  • “Voice lessons for tone-deaf adults Australia”

  • “Will singing lessons fix my voice or make me cry?”

Hi. I’m Lisa Richards.
Singer. Songwriter. Teacher. Human.
I help people to use their voices and to enjoy using their voices. As well as supporting them in unraveling unhelpful and untrue conversations around singing.  Whether you’re a total beginner, returning after years away, or a working singer trying to find a new freedom—it’s all welcome here.

So what’s it actually like to take singing lessons with me?

Let me tell you.
It’s not standing in front of a mirror doing vocal exercises until you question your life choices.
It’s not being told to “sing from your diaphragm” and left to figure it out alone.
And it’s definitely not me trying to make you sound like someone else.

Here’s what it is.

It’s private. Focused. Personal.

I work 1-on-1, online or in person. I ask questions. I listen. Then we get to work on your voice.

It’s weirdly fun.

Even if you're shy. Even if you’re scared. (Especially then.)

It’s technical—but it’s in plain English.

I explain things until they make sense to you. No jargon. No opera-speak. Just tools that work for you. Everyone is different. An approach that works for one student, may not work for another. That’s not your problem to figure out. That’s mine.

It’s flexible.

You can come weekly, fortnightly, or grab a lesson block. We can work on vocal strength, pitch, tone, confidence, original songs, vocal freedom, recording and  performance prep, ease, vocal joy, finding your originality…

What kind of singers do I work with?

  •  Beginners who’ve never sung in front of anyone (but want to)

  •  Adults who used to sing and are finding their way back

  •  Teens who need a safe, creative outlet

  •  People with tired, overused voices …speakers and singers

  •  People who say “I can’t sing” but secretly, desperately, want to.

  • Singers who have hit a wall with their voices or careers and are frustrated

  • Singers looking for that elusive ‘more’

  • Songwriters who want to sing their own songs and make an impact

  • Singers wanting support to work towards performance or recording goals

Is this trauma-informed?

Yes.
I’ve worked with many people navigating trauma, anxiety, perfectionism, and fear.
This is a space where your nervous system gets to breathe, too.

P.S. Can anyone learn to sing?

Yes.
But the question I’d ask is—can you learn to feel at home in your voice?

Also yes. And that’s the real win.
